How Does An Air Source Heat Pump System Work?

The sun heats the air.

The air flows through an air source heat pump.

The heat energy in the air is extracted, concentrated, and transferred into enough hot water to meet all your home’s heating and hot water needs.

It’s that simple.

air source heat pumpEven in winter, on cloudy days, or cold nights, the air still carries heat energy from the sun. An Energy Conservation Group Air Source Central Heating system works effectively in air temperatures as low as -15c.

Because it’s an intelligent  system, it just works a little harder when it needs to.

A modern condensing oil or a gas fired boiler works at about an 85% efficiency rate. That means that for every £1 of oil or gas you burn, your boiler produces about 85p worth of heat energy. With an older, conventional boiler, every £1 you burn can produce as little as 55p - 65p  worth of heat!

How heat pump technology works

Our heating systems require only a small amount of electricity to upgrade and move heat from one location to another. The heat is upgraded to a higher temperature using the refrigerant cycle and is then used to deliver efficient heat to any building via a ducted air or wet system.

  1. Compression: Refrigerant in it's vapour state is compressed, forcing it to occupy less space. This heats the vapour to temperatures of 75ºC to 80ºC.
  2. Condensing: The hot pressurised refrigerant vapour is then passed through a heat exchanger. The vapour is condensed into a liquid and the heat generated is transferred to heat the air and/or water that is used within the building.
  3. Expansion: The cooled refrigerant liquid is then passed through an expansion valve which reduces the pressure on the refrigerant allowing it to return to it's normal state.
  4. Evaporation: Liquid refrigerant is passed through a second heat exchanger. Because refrigerant has a very low boiling temperature (as low as -50ºC), the refrigerant evaporates, absorbing heat energy from the surrounding environment.
how air source heat pumps work

The Energy Conservation Group Air Source Heating system uses the advanced Mitsubishi Ecodan air to water heat pumps which work at between 300% and 500% efficiency – which means that for every £1 of electricity used to power them, they produce between £3 and £5 worth of heat energy.

So, Air Source Heating will heat your home and supply hot water just like a conventional system. But as it’s at least 3 times more efficient  it will save you money and help you help the planet by significantly reducing your carbon emissions.
