Commercial Solar PV

Helping to turn energy into commercial advantage.

We all face a reality where energy will represent an ever increasing liability, but you can take steps to reduce and off-set it with investment in renewable energy.

 2011 ANNUAL ENERGY STATEMENT

Delivered by Chris Huhne on 23 Nov 2011

“Lower levels of energy efficiency savings mean our policies will typically have a larger impact on energy bills for businesses.

By 2020, policies are estimated to add 19% to the average energy bill of businesses that are medium-sized energy consumers.”

Energy prices are already a major concern for business even before the DECC forecast above becomes reality. Running a business in a commercially and environmentally sustainable way is a constant challenge. Here are some Energy Conservation Group clients who are taking big steps to minimize their energy costs and, in some cases, turning energy costs into energy profit.

We are working with a number of companies to help them not only save money on energy, but make money by selecting the right renewable energy solution to yield maximum returns from long term goverment incentives like the Feed-in Tariff and Renewable Heat Incentive Schemes.

The Energy Conservation Group are specialist installers of Solar PV, Solar Thermal, and Air Source Heating.

Each of these technologies will significantly reduce energy costs and enhance the day to day efficiency of your business.

But, deployed in combination these technologies, and the incentive schemes that support them, can deliver stellar returns on investment.

Case Studies:

SOLAR POWERED FISH!

Houghton Springs Fish Farm in Dorset has become the first fish farm in the UK to invest in solar power. Their 10kWp system will make a major contribution to cutting energy bills and will benefit from 25 years of guaranteed income from the Feed-in Tariff scheme.

The hatchery at Houghton Springs is home to over 1 million young trout and arctic char, all of which have to be constantly oxygenated by a state of the art pumping system.

Hans Hoff, the farm’s founder and owner, said “farming high quality fish is a hugely competitive business, and accelerating energy costs have made life extremely difficult over the last few years. We already recycle our water to protect the environment, so investing in renewable energy to power our pumps was an inevitable next step”.

SOLAR POWERED BUGGIES

Remedy Oak, one of the UK’s leading golf courses, is cutting its energy costs by generating electricity using Solar PV.

Faced with the prospect of inexorably rising bills, Remedy Oak have installed an 8.3kWp solar PV system from the Energy Conservation Group.

Approximately one third is on the club house roof helping to power operational facilities. The other two thirds are on the buggy shed helping to charge up what they can now legitimately claim to be solar powered buggies. Both will contribute to cut approximately 15% of the club’s electricity costs and both will earn long term, index linked income from the Feed-in Tariff scheme.

FREEZING ENERGY COSTS

Taylor Catering Foods is a long established, leading wholesaler of frozen foods. Large scale freezing of food requires a consistently high level of electricity consumption, so home grown power plus a financial incentive to justify the initial investment was a compelling option for the business.

The company has installed a 50kWp PV system. Mark Taylor, owner and MD, said “I am very happy with how the process of installation has been carried out and we can already see the benefit of the free power making a positive impact on our energy costs”.

BJP INSURANCE

As an award winning commercial insurance broker, BJP constantly look to the future to assess risk, and the prospect of energy costs continuing to rise is one of their easier judgement calls.

To mitigate that, and to secure a long term index linked income stream, the company installed a 15.5kWp system on their Wokingham office.

Ian Holmes, Group Financial Accountant, said “BJP isn’t a particularly high energy consuming business, but our costs have increased over the last few years and this is the first meaningful opportunity we have had to do something about that”.
